"Travel to a galaxy not so far away for a cosmic comedy adventure about a determined robot named WALL-E. After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for, the curious and lovable WALL-E discovers a new purpose in life when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE. Join them and a hilarious cast of characters on a fantastic journey across the universe."

    This movie is magic.

Bob has always said that this was his favourite movie. He grew up watching it with his father - desperately wanting the kind of romance, the compassion, felt between WALL-E and EVE.

    I like the environmental message.

Some people, lots of people, dismiss this movie as boring, or heavy handed. That couldn't be further from the truth. Just because a movie says we probably shouldn't destroy our planet through our overly materialistic and capitalistic society - and it's right! - doesn't make it a bad thing. Just because there's not a ton of dialogue, that doesn't make the romance between our two characters any less poignant. If you're expecting a Toy Story style romp - then yes, I concede, you might find this boring. But WALL-E has never tried to be that.

Bob was worried, as we watched this film, that I might not see the magic the way he does. That it might not effect me in the same way. We'd never watched it together before, somehow. But, seeing his passion, watching it through his eyes, how could I not?

This movie is magic because it can take a simple story - two characters falling in love - and a simple setting - the barren wasteland of our home planet - and make it mean so much more. There is more humanity in the robots than the humans they've been created to serve. There's a poetry to that. The de-evolution of humans is believable, and already happening in the real world, to some degree.

Honestly, I think so many people are turned off by this film because it hits too close to home. This absolutely is something humans could do to our home planet, to ourselves. We're well on our way. But as the credits show, we can turn it around. As long as people want to make a difference, then there is hope for our world and always will be.

The scenes shot in space are beautiful. The relationship between EVE and WALL-E is special, and they are probably one of my favourite romantic couples in cinematic history  if I'm being honest. The boy from the wrong side of the tracks and the well to-do girl he falls hopelessly in love with and who takes forever to notice him? That's a classic.

As I write it out, I'm concerned my husband may be using our relationship to try and recreate a movie.

That's fine though - because I don't mind being the EVE to his WALL-E.

This movie is magic - and it's already become our official tradition to watch this every New Years Eve. Is there a better way to ring in the new year? I don't think so.
